Australian Gold Coast shark nets under review

A group of government and community representatives is preparing to make recommendations to the Queensland Government about the Gold Coast's shark nets.

The Shark Marine Advisory Group met yesterday just days after a humpback calf died near nets off Currumbin Beach.

Chairman Peter Drake says it will commission an independent consultant to study shark net data and suggest possible alternatives.

"If we can identify an area where we could guarantee public safety while making a modification to the program, make a recommendation to the minister based on fact, if we experiment with something we want to maintain human safety, as well as coming down with the results that are beneficial to the general public," he said.
