Deep sea creatures discovered off Western Australia

New marine research has uncovered unidentified deep sea creatures and underwater canyons off the Western Australian coast.

A research vessel is mapping the ocean floor on the continental shelf and has discovered new fish and coral species living in water up to 1.5 kilometres deep.

It is hoped the discoveries will help scientists understand the evolution of marine animals.

Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell has said the research will be used to determine which marine areas should be protected.
