Shark fins discovered after car crash

Cape Town - Three people died and a fourth is in a critical condition after the car they had been travelling in on Sunday afternoon ended up in the Black River in Pinelands. In the ensuing rescue drama, three bags of shark fins were discovered in the vehicle.

Die Burger learned that the driver of the car, who was the sole survivor, will be questioned soon about the shark fins.

According to police spokesperson inspector Bernadine Steyn, charges of culpable homicide and the illegal possession of shark fins will be investigated.

The men's identities are not yet known. The car ended up in the river when the driver hit a lamppost on the N2 highway near Pinelands.

According to Dennis Booysen, an eyewitness, the incident happened at about 15:20 on Sunday afternoon.

Swerved

The driver of the vehicle swerved to the left lane of the highway and did not see an approaching vehicle. As a result, he drove into the lamppost on the highway and the car plunged into the water.

"When my brother-in-law and I arrived at the scene later, the vehicle was already in the water. Only the driver, who was clearly suffering from shock, was sitting on the bank.

"We immediately jumped into the water and took one of the men out of the water, but he died a couple of minutes later.

"The other two men who had been taken from the water by the Metro emergency services and police divers were already dead."
