Australia: Whale freed from Gold Coast shark nets

A young whale has been freed from shark nets off Queensland's Gold Coast.

The juvenile humpback became entangled in nets off Tugun just before noon AEST.

Tony Ham from Boating and Fisheries says the whale appears to be in good health.

"There's no damage to the animal other than some scuff marks from the gear, and basically no cuts or injuries in that regard, and it swam away quite healthily and quite happily," he said.

The whale was the fourth to be caught in shark nets off the Gold Coast in about six weeks.
